Dr Tay Jia Sheng
I am a vascular, endovascular and general surgeon, and the founder and medical director of Spectrum Vascular & General Surgery in Singapore. My clinical work spans the full range of vascular disease — varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial disease and critical limb ischaemia, aortic aneurysms, carotid disease, and dialysis access — alongside a full general surgical practice: hernias, gallbladder surgery, skin lesions, emergency surgery, and gastroscopy and colonoscopy screening at MOH-accredited endoscopy centres.
My practice is built on a one-stop model: consultation, duplex ultrasound and treatment planning happen in a single visit, and I read every scan and make every treatment decision myself. This continuity means the surgeon who interprets your imaging is the surgeon who operates on you, and the findings of each step feed directly into the next.
Wherever the evidence supports it, I favour minimally invasive, office-based treatment under local anaesthesia — techniques that allow most patients to walk out of the clinic the same day and return quickly to normal life.
Beyond the clinic, I am regularly invited to international conferences, live workshops and training programmes as a speaker, proctor and live-case operator, sharing endovascular and venous techniques with fellow surgeons. The full record of these engagements is below.
Career & training
I graduated with the double degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, in 2004. My formative years deliberately crossed surgical disciplines — general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and paediatric surgery — and I began Advanced Specialist Training in cardiothoracic surgery, with substantial exposure to both adult and paediatric cardiac surgery.
Wanting to bring surgical care to a broader group of patients, I transitioned to Advanced Specialist Training in General Surgery with the specific aim of practising vascular surgery. I obtained a Master of Medicine in Surgery from NUS in 2015 and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2017. After practising at Changi General Hospital, I joined Sengkang General Hospital in 2019 as a key founding surgeon of its Vascular & Endovascular Service, contributing to the establishment and development of the unit. In public practice I performed between 633 and 778 operations a year alongside clinical teaching commitments.
Throughout that time I trained abroad — in the United States, Australia, South Korea and Thailand — learning techniques from international colleagues and bringing them back to my practice in Singapore.
My endovascular and surgical repertoire includes:
- Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, including repair of ruptured aneurysms (rEVAR), endosuture aneurysm repair (ESAR), and chimney and parallel graft techniques
- Minimally invasive saphenous vein graft harvest for arterial bypass — a technique performed by only a small number of vascular surgeons in Singapore
- Peripheral atherectomy — orbital, rotational and directional — with distal embolic protection
- Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guidance for precise balloon angioplasty
- Intravascular lithotripsy
- Catheter-based thrombolysis and thrombectomy — rheolytic, rotational, mechanical and aspiration — for arteries, veins and dialysis access circuits
