What is endovenous ablation?
Endovenous ablation replaced traditional vein stripping as the standard of care for truncal varicose veins. A thin catheter is passed into the faulty vein through a needle puncture and delivers controlled radiofrequency or laser energy, sealing the vein from the inside. No cuts, no stitches, no general anaesthesia.
What to expect
- Performed under local anaesthesia in the clinic or day surgery centre
- Dilute local anaesthetic is placed around the vein under ultrasound guidance, which protects surrounding tissue
- The procedure typically takes about an hour, and you walk out the same day
- Mild bruising or tightness along the treated vein settles over one to two weeks
Results
Large clinical series report high closure rates for radiofrequency and laser ablation, with recovery measured in days rather than the weeks associated with open stripping. Visible surface clusters are often treated in the same sitting with phlebectomy or sclerotherapy.
Ablation or VenaSeal?
Both close the faulty vein; they differ in how. Heat-based ablation has the longest track record; adhesive closure avoids tumescent anaesthesia and stockings.
