HIFU Echotherapy (Non-Invasive Vein Treatment)

Sealing leaking veins with focused ultrasound from outside the skin — no needle in the vein, no incision, nothing left behind.

What is HIFU echotherapy?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) echotherapy treats a leaking truncal vein entirely from outside the body. Ultrasound energy is focused precisely on the vein wall — the same principle as focusing sunlight with a magnifying glass — heating and sealing the vein at the focal point while the skin and surrounding tissue stay comparatively protected. Nothing enters the vein: no catheter, no glue, no sclerosant, no implant.

How it differs from other techniques

Every other truncal vein treatment — endovenous ablation, VenaSeal, MOCA — requires at least one puncture to enter the vein. Echotherapy is the only approach with no break in the skin at all, which makes it worth discussing for patients who cannot stop anticoagulation, have needle phobia, or simply prefer a non-invasive option. The trade-offs are honest ones: treatment sessions are longer, not every vein is anatomically suitable, and as a newer technique its long-term evidence base is still accumulating compared with ablation's decades of follow-up data.

What the procedure involves

  • Performed in the clinic; no anaesthesia is required for most patients, though local anaesthetic around the vein can be used for comfort
  • The vein is mapped and the device tracks along it, delivering focused pulses under continuous ultrasound visualisation
  • A session typically takes around an hour per treated vein
  • There is no wound to dress — you walk out and resume normal activities

What to expect afterwards

Mild tenderness or firmness along the treated vein is common and settles. Skin-level effects at the treatment site are uncommon when the anatomy is well selected. A follow-up ultrasound confirms the vein has closed; if a segment remains open, it can be retreated or dealt with by another technique.

Is it right for me?

Vein depth, diameter and straightness decide suitability, which is a scan question before anything else. At consultation your veins are mapped, and I go through whether echotherapy is a sensible first choice for your anatomy or whether a catheter-based technique will serve you better.
